The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged the state’s executive arm of government to direct relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to urgently put measures in place to prevent flooding in 2024.
The assembly made the call during its plenary on Thursday.
It said that the call became necessary to mitigate the impact of downpours in 2024.
The call was consequent upon a motion brought before the assembly by Mr Kehinde Olatunde representing Akinyele Constituency II as regards the impact of flooding last rainy season.
Olatunde had said that flooding caused caused much damage in the Alabata Community of his constituency.
According to the lawmaker, no fewer than 20 houses in the community were ravaged by flooding.
While deliberating on the motion, lawmakers in their separate submissions stressed the need for the executive arm to urgently put measures in place to prevent communities, particularly flood-prone ones, from being ravaged by flooding.
The lawmakers said that residents of the state should equally prepare for downpours in 2024.
The Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, consequently called on relevant MDAs to urgently put measures in place to prevent flooding.
He said that there was the need for the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bodies to visit flood-prone areas for critical assessment.
Nigerian Meteorological Agency and other relevant agencies had predicted heavy rains in Oyo in 2024.
