Owo killings: Segun Showunmi grieves, says time to strengthen Amotekun Corps is now

Bankole Taiwo, Abeokuta

The PDP governorship candidate for Ogun State, Otunba Segun Showunmi has said that with the last Sunday terrorist attack on the innocent worshippers of St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, the challenge of insecurity in the country has assumed a dimension where it is now impossible for anyone to sleep with two eyes closed.

While condemning this horrendous attack which he said has no doubt left him devastated and benumbed, Otunba Segun Showunmi said the dastardly attack was no doubt a grand design to implode the country.

He said “how in God’s name do we prevent this. How can we even be discussing elections under these conditions? Oh no, I am in such agony. What could be the point and rationality for this? Shall this country not look at the underlying issues, shall we not ask who these beasts are and who their backers and sponsors are?

“To who shall we pray now? When worshippers are killed in church during service. I feel really unhappy and sad about this one killing too many. Our security architecture has broken down irrevocably. This is really shameful, even beasts and savages don’t do this to themselves. May Owo be consoled, may we all be healed and get over this nightmare”.

Showunmi has however declared that, it is now obvious that time to begin massive recruitment into the State Security Network, otherwise called Amotekun Corps and further strengthen it with all other logistics support so that it could rise to the terrible occasion at hand is now.

He said time for the state governors to also justify the spending of the humongous security vote is now as such fund should go into rejigging the security architecture of their respective states warning that doing otherwise would always leave the people at the mercy of these blood thirsty terrorists.

Showunmi equally urged the governors of Southwestern States to begin biometric capture of their citizens to a verifiable address while each family should also be mandated to file in periodically those visiting them, saying that this would help to keep a close tab on those coming and going out of their respective state at any given time.

He disclosed further that this is also the time the traditional rulers, Baales and other community leaders be given statutory roles to play in keeping their communities safe such that they could be held accountable when anything goes wrong.

Aside encouraging use of satellite to monitor movement of people in and out of their states, Showunmi has equally called for reinvigorated community based vigilante that operate on schedule shift and are assigned in such a way that no location would be considered a soft target by these marauding killers.

The former Spokesman to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has also called for proper security summit with the best global experts to profer actionable solutions to combating terrorism which is an asymmetric non-conventional war.
