Over 700 nomads displaced in 5 camps in Guri as flood takes over their residence

Out of 400 nomadic schools in Jigawa State, 31 of them have been taken over by Fulani refugees whose hamlets were destroyed by flood in four local government areas in the state.

This was confirmed by the Executive Secretary of Nomadic Education, Jigawa State, Hajia Ramatu Muhd in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in her office .

Hajia Ramatu said that the affected areas included: Guri, Kirikasamma, Birniwa and Taura local government areas of the state.

Ramatu stated that the Fulanis living at those five camps in Guri Local Government Area are facing serious challenge of starvation,poor health care, with no assistance from government or individual.

She confirmed that majority of the households who became victims of flood disaster were living in critical conditions and poor state of health, no medication, no food in the local government area.

She appealed to Jigawa State Government as a matter of urgency to investigate the matter and assist these affected people who are in a poor state of health.

According to Hajiya Ramatu, “in Mara Fulani camp, over 256 Fulanis were living there. Also, 116 persons are taking refuge in Matarar Kano camp”.

Hajia Ramatu shed tears at Shifka refugee camp due to the level of abandonment by the government and the poor living condition of the refugees who were kept in an open place and sleeping under trees, with no mattress nor mat, no financial support, and no medication, these were people numbering over 78.

Also, in Askandu  and kwanar Mai Labbo camps, 125 persons are living in a serious poor condition due to unavailability of government presence.

She explained further that there was no good drinking water in all the camps. Noting that people were suffering of malaria, typhoid and many other contagious diseases that could easily kill the nomads.

She explained that they were now looking at an alternative way to establish nomadic schools in all the camps for the benefits of their children.
