Osun Govt warns market women against roadside trading

By Ismail Azeez, Osogbo

The Osun State Government has warned  market women and other traders located along major express roads in the State against the habit of trading their goods beside the road on market days.

The Executive Secretary, Office of Transportation in the State, Engr. Bilal Adiat gave the warning on Tuesday, while featuring on a radio programm monitored by our correspondent in Osogbo.

Adiat urged the residents not to patronise traders who display their goods on the road for their own safety and to allow free flow of traffic particularly in Owode-Ede, Igbona areas and Osogbo the state capital.

The Executive Secretary said market women at Owode-Ede and Igbona markets are mostly fond of displaying their goods very close to the roads and in the process impeding free flow of traffic on the road.

Adiat added that it causes more danger to lives and properties as heavy duty vehicles and small cars can easily skid off the road and crush people because they are too close to the roadside.

The Transport boss used the opportunity to warn commercial motorcycle riders who are also fond of locating their passenger points very close to express roads, stressing that it is dangerous to the riders and their passengers.

While stressing that the State Government will not fold it’s arms and watch the commercial motorcycle riders pose dangers to themselves and other members of the society, Engr. Adiat said offenders will be made to face the full wrath of the law henceforth.

“At the office of transportation, we stand against anything or anyone taking steps that can hinder the free flow of traffic and cause danger to members of the society. Our roads should not be used to display goods or as parking space for minibuses and motorbikes,” the Executive Secretary stated.
