Osun Gov’t to monitor public school pupils via technology, provide smart cards

Abimbola Abatta, Osogbo

As part of efforts to improve the standard of  education, Osun State government says plans are underway to ensure that public school students in the state are captured through technology with the provision of smart card for each of them to aid proper monitoring.

The smart card will contain a comprehensive data of each pupil which will enable the State Government through the Ministry of Education to properly monitor and track them and as well monitor their performances in both internal and external examinations at a glance.

Commissioner for Education, Hon. Folorunsho Oladoyin dropped the hint on Friday at a meeting with school principals in Osogbo ahead of the resumption of 2020/2021 academic school calendar.

The Commissioner stated that the smart card technology will ensure the safety of all public school pupils in the state as the government will be able to easily supply information about any student.

The former lawmaker who reiterated the government’s determination to bring back the training of core values and morals into the state’s educational structure noted that no student will henceforth be promoted into the next class without passing the promotion examination.

He called on school principals to devise a means of mentoring and monitoring students through the attachment of teachers to groups of students, adding that the government will begin to organise annual education congress where stakeholders will deliberate on how to improve the sector.

In his words, “The students’ smart card that the State Government is planning to produce for all students is something very good in the sense that it will enable us to keep tabs on all pupils.

“The smart card will go a long way in helping to monitor students both in and out of the school.

“We can track and monitor their academic performance at a glance as their data and everything about them can be sourced at the tap of a button.”
