OPEC: Sanusi to host Energy, IT workshop

The Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Country (OPEC),  Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, will host the third workshop on Energy and Information Technology on Wednesday, 26 May 2021, through video conferencing.

The workshop which is aimed at discussing germain issues that are critical to energy technology and associated trends.

According to OPEC, this year edition “will include topics such as demand for petrochemicals and related emerging technologies, innovation and trends in the digitalization of the energy sector, and developments in blockchain and communication technologies.”

Key experts from OPEC Member Countries, other oil producing and consuming states, international organizations and key global companies are expected to grace the workshop on Wednesday

OPEC Secretary General, Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, explained noted that the workshop will exploit the vital strategic roles IT plays in the affairs of energy and oil in particular.

He said, “The oil sector has always remained flexible and adaptive to emerging technologies with the aim to utilize them to boost the efficiency and effectiveness of the industry’s operations, such as in extraction, exploration and transportation.”

He added that “technology has helped our industry to raise its standards, as well as enhance its environmental credentials.”

Sanusi further added that “technology’s leading role in energy has ushered the Secretariat to invest a great deal of its resources to study this ever-evolving field, including in its World Oil Outlook (WOO), which examines the industry’s long-term prospects.”

The third edition forms part of the Secretariat’s role in area of research programme, which includes organizing meetings and workshops to exchange information and discuss critical issue in the oil and gas sector

The previous edition of the workshop attracted over 200 participants, representing OPEC Member Countries, industry, government and research institutions.
