The Lagos State Police Command has made significant progress in curbing bank robberies, with only one successful incident recorded in the state since 2007.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, made this revelation while speaking at the 18th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security, organised by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.
Egbetokun commended the Lagos State Government for its steadfast support of law enforcement agencies, highlighting that this partnership has been crucial in maintaining security in the state.
“What we are doing here today is part of the usual assistance that the state government has been providing to the police. Without the support we receive from the government, we would not be able to achieve what we have in Lagos. We would have been overwhelmed by insecurity,” Egbetokun remarked.
He added, “There was a time when armed robbery and bank robbery were rampant in Lagos, but I can confirm that since 2007, only one bank robbery has been successful in the state – and that was as far back as 2014. The days of armed robbery and bank robberies are now behind us.”
Egbetokun also pointed out the unique security challenges Lagos faces as Nigeria’s economic hub, emphasising the continuous influx of people into the state each day. He stressed that this ongoing migration has significant security implications, making it essential for the police to continuously adapt and enhance their strategies.
