One year anniversary: RSU VC recounts achievements

The Vice Chancellor (VC),Rivers State University (RSU),Prof Nlerum Okogbule has enumerated his achievements as part of activities marking his one year in office, having being appointed VC on 5/3/2020 by Gov Nyesom Wike.

Addressing journalists at the University campus, Friday in Port Harcourt, the VC said one of his greatest achievements is peace and security on campus. He attributed the feat to the cooperation of staff, students, trade unions, host community and of course the security agencies,who he said patrol the nooks and crannies of the University.

Prof Okogbule also pinpointed environmental sanitation on campus as yet another achievement of his administration in the last one year.

According to him, “We have adopted a deliberate strategy of ensuring that we have people who pick pebbles, pieces of papers,water satchet cans, etc all over the campus.The result is that on entering the campus,a new atmosphere of cleaning is readily witnessed,” the VC said.

He equally named construction of new projects as a great achievement of his leadership.

The VC said over eight new projects are either completed or ongoing in the University. These projects,he said are,Centre for Continuing Education, faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education buildings. Others he said are Enterpreneurship Centre, Anatomy, Senate, as well as Students Secretariat buildings. He explained that the projects were either funded directly by the state government or  Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

The VC also told journalists that staff promotion has been successfully carried out, while Student Union Government (SUG) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) elections were peacefully conducted unlike what obtains in other universities.

Prof Okogbule said accreditation of some disciplines have been achieved,while others are being vigorously pursued. He expressed confidence that the task will soon be accomplished.

The VC announced that the Rivers State Government under the able leadership of Gov Nyesom Wike has graciously approved the establishment of three new campuses for RSU to be located at Ahoada, Emohua and Etche local government areas in the state. He said the government has also released the sum of N16.6bn for the projects. He pointed out that arrangements are in top gear to commence bidding and subsequent construction  of the projects.

He thanked the management , staff and students of the University for their cooperation and assured that the next four years will witness complete transformation of the University under his leadership. He equally thanked the press for their support.
