One killed, seven injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crashes

A motorboy, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, tragically lost his life, while seven others sustained various degrees of injury in two separate accidents that occurred on Tuesday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, in the Saapade and Mowe areas.  

Seni Ogunyemi, the Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed that both accidents took place during the early hours of the day.  

The first incident occurred in the Saapade area, involving 21 individuals, including 17 adults and four children. According to Ogunyemi, the crash occurred when a Mack truck lost control due to a brake failure, colliding with a Nissan bus. 

Six people, including five women and one male child, were injured in the collision and were promptly taken to a nearby hospital by Good Samaritans before emergency responders arrived.  

Ogunyemi detailed the accident: “The collision involved a white Mack truck with the number plate KSF 960 XT and a Nissan bus with the number plate JJJ 594 YC. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck’s brake failure led to the crash. 

“Among the 21 occupants, there were nine males, eight females, three male children, and one female child. Six people were injured, including five females and one male child, who were transported to hospital by Good Samaritans before help arrived.”  

The second accident took place in the Mowe area, where a truck driver had parked in a service lane. Another truck, travelling at excessive speed, crashed into the stationary vehicle. The collision resulted in the death of the motorboy, who was trapped in the wreckage. An adult male also sustained injuries.  

Ogunyemi explained, “An eyewitness reported that the Howo truck was parked in the service lane when the Benz truck collided with it from behind due to speeding and a loss of control. This caused the motorboy’s death. The driver of the parked truck quickly moved his vehicle and hid it in front of the AIM Company, but it was later located by the police. The injured person was rescued and taken to an unknown hospital.”  

The vehicles involved were identified as a Benz truck, registration number EPE 224 XA, and a Howo truck, registration number GGE 149 XA.  

The remains of the deceased motorboy were recovered by TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and police officers, with the assistance of Good Samaritans, and were handed over to his family.
