Gunmen launched an early morning attack on Powishi village in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State on Thursday, killing a resident and setting houses ablaze. Livestock was also rustled during the attack.

The victim, identified as Malam Yusuf Akwara, was reportedly killed as the assailants, riding motorcycles, invaded the community.

In a statement, Gombe State Police Command spokesperson ASP Buhari Abdullahi confirmed the attack, stating that neighbors and security teams managed to extinguish the fires set by the attackers.

Despite a swift response from security forces, including personnel from the 301 Artillery Regiment and the police, the assailants fled before they could be apprehended.

Gombe State Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Usman, visited the village alongside commanders from the 301 Artillery Regiment and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

During the visit, they assessed the damage and extended condolences to the affected community.

Usman announced the deployment of detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), as well as officers from the Police Mobile Force and other units, to track down the perpetrators.
