…We won’t congratulate Gov. Akeredolu, PDP replies
Laraba Raphael, Abuja
The leadership of the All Progressive Congress, ( APC) has said it is expecting the opposition People Democratic Party, (PDP) to reciprocate the gesture it did when APC congratulated Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State as he won the election two weeks ago.
While addressing journalist on Monday in the National Secretariat, Abuja, the Chairman Caretaker, Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee Governor Mai Mala Buni said, “One good turn deserves another, and just like we congratulated PDP in the Edo election, we look forward to seeing PDP and the other political parties extend a similar gesture to us in the spirit of good sportsmanship. By so doing, we will make elections in Nigeria healthier and attractive, rather than making elections a do or die affair.”
Buni commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for their respective roles in making the exercise hitch-free.
“Our gratitude also goes to His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR and His Excellency Vice President Yemi Osibanjo GCON for their leadership roles and support to ensure the party emerges victorious.
“To the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Security agencies, local and international observers, you have been professional and ethical in the discharge of your responsibilities”
Similarly, he appreciated the people of Ondo State for trusting the party for a second term and for the supportive work that stakeholders, party members and supporters put in to actualize its victory.
“I want to specially congratulate you the people of Ondo state because this is your victory. I also thank you very much for renewing your mandate and putting your trust in the All Progressives Congress for the next four years.
“The efforts of the Ondo State Executive Committee, the local government and ward executives of the party, had greatly enriched our fortunes to win the election with less stress. The concept of team work being promoted by the Caretaker Committee remains our strong pillar in our collective quest to build a strong, united and prosperous APC.”
In the meantime, PDP said it will not congratulate Governor Akeredolu over his victory at the governorship poll. The party said it will announce its position in the coming days.
PDP, National Publicity Secretary,(NPS) Kola Ologbondiyan made this known while addressing journalist at a press briefing on Monday in the National Secretariat, Abuja.
He said, “Our party will, in due course, make its official position on the outcome of the Ondo election known, the PDP urges President Muhammodu Buhari to take steps that will accelerate the amendment of the Electoral Act, which was stalled following his failure to sign the amended Act of the National Assembly in 2019.”
According the NPS “Instead of begging the PDP for congratulatory message, Governor Buni should rather speak to this disturbing theft of oil money to fund his party’s vote buying at the expense of Nigerians who are bearing the brunt of increase in the pump price of fuel and corruption in the oil sector under the APC.”
While speaking at the briefing, Ologbondiyan said, “It is indeed ludicrous and completely absurd that Governor Buni is begging for endorsement of the election in spite of his awareness that the internal mechanism that produced his party’s candidate, as presided over by him, was faulty.
“It will therefore be pathetic for Governor Mai Buni to attempt to use the PDP to build something on the nothingness of his position in his party. The PDP is too structured as a party to be used by anybody, under any guise, in that regard,” Ologbondiyan stated.
