Ondo Assembly promises support for JIFORM on diaspora matters

The Ondo State House of Assembly, has promised to rally support from its peers in the Southwest region, for progress on diaspora issues.

Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun, Speaker of the house, gave this promise when he received the Journalists International Forum for Migration (JIFORM) on Wednesday, in Akure.

In a statement in Abuja by Mr Ajibola Abayomi, President of JIFORM, Oleyelogun,  said  the assembly was ready to identify with any programme that would facilitate capacity building for his colleagues.

Recall that JIFORM,  on  July 4,  invited participants to its third global migration summit, slated for Niagara Falls, Canada, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6.

Oleyelogun directed the house Committee on Diaspora Matters, to report to him on the proposal for the summit, saying that the event would be accorded the priority it deserved.

Responding, the  JIFORM president, stated that the 2021 global summit being organised by the body, would improve the capacity of legislators and other professionals in Nigeria, on migration matters.

Abayomi said that JIFORM which comprises of  over 300 journalists, covering migration issues across the continent,  is  ready to address migration matters at all costs.

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Ekiti Governor on Diaspora Affairs, Mr Femi Odere, solicited  support of the speaker on diaspora issues.

Odere, who also doubled as the Spokesman for Southwest Diaspora Focal Point Officers,  informed the lawmakers of the resolutions that came out of the earlier summit.

He said there was need to find  solutions to challenges that could  mitigate development of the Southwest.

The speaker was the Chairman, conference of Southwest Speakers of States Assemblies for the programmes of diaspora focal point officers in the region.

The visit came on the heels of a 2-day regional summit of  the southwest diaspora focal point officers, held in Ado Ekiti from June 28-29 with the theme; “Harnessing Southwest Diaspora Remittances for Regional Development.”

Present at the meeting were, Mr Tomide Akinribido, Chairman of the States House Committee on International Relations and Diaspora Affairs, Mr Favour Tomomewo,  member, house committee and Chairman of  house committee on Women Affairs; and Yemi Akintomide, member of JIFORM in Ondo state.
