Olusunle honoured as NMGS Fellow

A Research Director at the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Engr. Dr. Samuel Olugbenga O. Olusunle, has been conferred with the prestigious Fellow of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (FNMGS). The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) is one of the oldest professional bodies in the country, with a legacy dating back to 1961.

The late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first President and a notable Pan-Africanist, was the first patron of the NMGS. The Society held its 60th Annual International Conference and Exhibition (AICE) in Abuja, which concluded with an Awards and Recognition Night on 19 February 2025 at Chida International Hotel.

The event celebrated individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the growth of the mining and geosciences profession and those whose work has had a direct impact on Nigeria’s socio-economic development. Engr. Dr. Olusunle was among 43 distinguished members honoured with the Fellow category, the highest level of recognition within the Society.

The NMGS was initially founded as the Nigerian Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Society (NMGMS) before it was officially inaugurated in 1962 and later transformed into its current structure in 1977. The Society is dedicated to advancing the study and practice of mining, earth sciences, and metallurgy.

It also facilitates the acquisition and dissemination of scientific knowledge in these fields and upholds professional ethics. Additionally, NMGS is statutorily represented in the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG), which was established by Decree No. 40 of 1990.

Reacting to the honour, Dr. Olusunle expressed gratitude and emphasised the synergy between NASENI and NMGS. He noted that NASENI operates an institute dedicated to solid minerals exploitation (SOMMEDI) and, under the leadership of EVC/CEO Khalil S. Halilu, is actively involved in the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) project. He described these and other NASENI initiatives as potential areas for collaboration with NMGS.

Before assuming his current role at NASENI, Dr. Olusunle was the Managing Director of the Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI), Akure, one of NASENI’s research and development institutes. He is also a Fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Materials Science and Technology Society of Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Institute of Management, and the Nigerian Metallurgical Society. His recognition as a Fellow of NMGS further cements his contributions to Nigeria’s engineering, mining, and industrial sectors.
