Ogun police nab five suspects for reportedly murdering  a fisherman

Five persons have been arrested for allegedly killing and dumping the body of a fisherman named Segun Sikiru into a lagoon in Iwopin town of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The suspects, all members of the community, are Saheed Mureni, Afeez Mureni, Saheed Taidi, Thompson Samuel, and Ogoji Olorunwa.

Newsmen reports that the deceased and his two sons left their home for fishing, but suddenly noticed suspicious activities at their fish trap.

The suspects who were discovered stealing from Sikiru’s fish trap allegedly struck the deceased with a bamboo stick, striking him in the chest, while the two sons managed to escape the assault.

The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, on Tuesday said the arrest was made by operatives of the Abigi Police Division on Sunday after a report from the family .

Odutola said, “When the deceased spotted them at his fish trap, he tried to raise the alarm and draw the attention of people in the area to what was happening.

“However, the suspects allegedly attacked him, striking him in the chest with a bamboo stick.

“Once they realised he had lost consciousness, they reportedly threw him into the lagoon.”

Odutola stated that his body had been recovered and taken to a mortuary in Ijebu-Ode and investigation was ongoing.
