Ogun: Police blame rise in criminal activities on bad parenting

The Ogun State Police Command has lamented recurring criminal activities in the state and the nation, mentioning bad parenting as the cause of crime in the Nigeria.

The Police Spokesperson, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this at a day Symposium on Security, organised by a group of youths, under the aegis of Ogun Youth Advocate for Social Development (OGYASD) in Abeokuta, the states capital to sensitise the youths in the state ahead of the 2023

Abimbola who spoke on the theme ‘Instilling Security Consciousness In The Youths Ahead Of 2023 Elections,’ equally lamented that too much emphasis on money in the Nigeria society is fueling criminal activities.

Abimbola who was speaking in reference to some recent crimes committed in the state, especially that of the teenage boys who killed their girlfriend for money making condemned parental negligence amongst parents.

He said, “Parents are no longer guiding their children, our parents nowadays are after what they want to get in the business they want to do, once they go to work, they come back late in the night. If we continue to lay more emphasis on material wealth, crime would continue to grow.

“Nowadays, we have un-trained children that are giving birth to set of un-trained children in the society, a child impregnating a child, what do we expect? And their parents would leave them to cater for themselves, that is where we are getting it wrong.

“The first thing we should know as youth if we want reduce security issue is to stop laying more emphasis on material wealth.”

Also, the Public Relations Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dyke Ogbonnaya, warned the youths against being used as instrument of violence during electioneering period.

According to Ogbonnaya, decadence of moral and values amongst Nigeria youths has contributed to the increase in crime and criminality.

The OGYASD President, Comrade Oluseyi Alamu disclosed that the symposium was organised to change the narrative of using the youths for thuggery and other social vices during elections.

Alamu said, “It is our onus to prepare the mind of the youths towards the coming elections in order to prevent history from repeating itself in the political space. This is OGYASD means of contributing to the Social development of the nation in this period and a way of complimenting the efforts of key security outfits towards ensuring the security of not only the youths but the entire people of Ogun state.”
