Ogun maintains stand on motorcyclists registration, assures riders affordable taxation
The Ogun State Government condemns the recent public disruption and breach of peace in some parts of the State by some Okada riders following the decision by the security agencies in the State that Okada riders be registered for ease of identification and investigation of criminal activities associated with okada operations.
In view of the lingering security and safety challenges prevalent in the country with demonstrable links with some okada riders, security agencies having expressed their concerns identified infiltration of the sector by criminals which has come to reinforce the need for proper registration of Okada operators with a view to coordinating, overseeing and monitoring their activities and operations so as to ensure safety of life and properties of residents, visitors and workers in the State.
These worrisome tales of kidnapping and other violent crimes associated with Okada precipitated the agreement of stakeholders in the transport sector to commence the registration exercise.
The Ministry of Transportation is however engaging with motorcycle Union stakeholders in order to promptly check the complaints about indiscriminate non-government levies and charges imposed by government’s appointed revenue collectors.
The protesting riders are therefore urged to make legitimate compliant of grievances through established channels rather than public demonstration which is capable of bringing about anarchy and chaos in the State.
