Ogun LG Elections: Purported withdrawal Of Adebutu’s faction of PDP a farce
The media has been trending since yesterday with one faction of the Ogun State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Hon. Ladi Adebutu and under the factional Chairmanship of Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele, feigning withdrawal from the local government election for which it has no candidates.
Interestingly, the other faction of PDP controlled by the structure of Late Senator Buruji Kashamu, whose candidates have been cleared by OGSIEC, has however issued a public statement confirming its participation in same elections slated for Saturday.
The truth of the matter is that an Abeokuta High Court yesterday dismissed the case filed by Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele and Anor against the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) in suit No M/55/2021, seeking an oder of court to compel the OGSIEC to accept and use the nomination list of candidates of its own faction for the forthcoming LG elections.
The Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Gboyega Ogunfowora, decided that the consent judgment of the Federal High Court upon which the Applicants based their case was entered long after the Respondent (OGSIEC) had screened and cleared the candidates of all political parties including PDP, and that the court cannot compel the Respondent to accept the list at the stage when the Respondent had concluded all actions preparatory to the LG elections.
This effectively put paid to the dream of the Ladi Adedibu’s faction to participate in the election. How then can you withdraw from an election that you don’t have candidates in?
Like the latin legal expression: ex turpi causa non oritur actio (You can’t put something on nothing.)
