Ogun Govt debunks allegations against Attorney-General
By Adekunle Omobolaji
The Ogun State Government has strongly dismissed a recent report accusing its Attorney-General, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), of attempting to secure the release of murder suspects, describing it as “biased and malicious.”
According to the government, the report was deliberately concocted to thwart the Attorney-General’s review of alleged misconduct and collusion by officers of the Nigerian Police Force Zone 2, Lagos State, in a contentious land dispute case.
The case involves two rival land agents in Ogun State, with one faction reportedly manipulating the police to harass their opponents, fabricating accusations, and presenting rehearsed witnesses.
Despite the inconsistencies in their statements, the complainants have manufactured fresh murder allegations, which were thoroughly investigated by the Ogun State Police Command and dismissed by credible witnesses.
The government alleges that the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Zone 2, Fayoade, wrongfully intervened in the matter, attempting to obtain a detention order in Lagos, despite the alleged offence taking place in Ogun State.
However, the magistrate rejected the AIG’s request, ruling that the detention order was unlawful and instructing the police to charge the suspect within 24 hours.
Instead of complying with the court’s directive, the police reportedly defied the order and sought another detention warrant in Ota, Ogun State, which was also denied.
The government asserts that the suspect has been unlawfully detained for over a week without being formally charged, in clear violation of constitutional provisions.
The Ogun State Government views these actions as a calculated effort to obstruct justice and intimidate the Attorney-General. It maintains that the Ministry of Justice remains resolute in its commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding public interest, and preventing any abuse of the judicial process.
