Ogun Government says it has begun evacuation and rehabilitation of mentally-derailed destitutes who constitute nuisance to communities across the state.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Adijat Adeleye, who made the disclosure on Friday in Abeokuta, said the exercise was geared toward sanitising the environment and ensuring security of residents.

Adeleye decried the increasing number of destitutes roaming the metropolis, while stressing the need for the ministry to expedite action to curtail the abnormality and reduce the dangers it posed to the society.

She stated that the rehabilitation department of the ministry had gone round the 20 local government areas of the state to ensure that streets were rid of vagrants, for the safety of others.

The commissioner stated that this set of people would be properly rehabilitated and united with their families after receiving medical care.

“Let me advise the good people of Ogun to ensure they maintain social and mental health and also refrain from activities that can lead to mental disorders, such as drug abuse, among others.

“I want to assure you that, as a government, we won’t relent in our resolve to ensure the wellbeing of our residents,” Adeleye said.

The commissioner assured that those picked would go through medical examinations to determine their conditions with a view to ascertaining the real miscreants and those in disguise.
