The Ogun State Government has approved the allocation of 15 housing units from its affordable housing programme in Itanrin, Ijebu-Ode, for residents of the recently demolished Igbegba Housing Estate.
The demolition, which was part of the state’s urban regeneration efforts, affected the 15 housing units.
The General Manager of the Ogun State Housing Corporation, Mr. Wale Ojo, announced this during a visit to the site on Wednesday.
He stated that residents had been given a four-month notice before the demolition, and mortgages were extended to them at a discounted interest rate.
“Residents were given four months’ notice prior to the demolition exercise, and the mortgages were extended to the people at a discounted interest rate.
“Some of the residents have also keyed into the affordable housing programme of the state government.
“The state government is aware of the present economy of the country and, as a result, has made it mandatory to find succour for the residents of the estate by giving them relief measures, including the opportunity to key into the affordable housing scheme, as well as the avenue to access loans,” Ojo said.
One resident affected by the situation, Mr. Akeem Rasheed, mentioned that the state government actually provided them with a four-month notice to evacuate their homes to facilitate the commencement of regeneration efforts.
He however appealed to the government to uphold their commitment to providing relief measures as promised, emphasising the importance of fulfilling this pledge. Rasheed emphasised that if the government honours its word, the residents would deeply appreciate it, noting that the state government’s generous actions would leave a lasting positive impact on the residents.
