Ogun 2019: We are strong contenders, KLM, Hon. Akinlade fire back at Yewa Rebirth Alliance

By Bankole Taiwo

As politicians in Ogun West Senatorial district of the State comprising of the Yewa and Awori intensify battle to occupy the governor’s seat for the first time since the creation of the state 41 years ago, two governorship aspirants from the bloc, Otunba Kolawole Lawal Mobolorunduro and three term federal lawmaker, Hon. Akinlade Isiaq have maintained that they were in the race not as pretenders but as strong contenders to actualize Yewa/Awori long governorship dream in the state.

The two frontline politicians made this declaration while speaking with our Correspondent in separate interviews. Both were reacting to a statement credited to Yewa Rebirth Alliance which declared that aside the quartet of Alhaji Gboyega Isiaka from PDP,  Suraj Adekunbi Ishola, incumbent Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Sen. Solomon Adeola, popularly called YAYI and representing Lagos West at the Senate as well as Chief Tolu Odebiyi, Chief of Staff to the State governor, any other governorship candidates from the bloc were at best pretenders and jesters who were only out to once again scuttle the chances of the territory to pilot the affairs of the state.

In a release signed by Rev. Adeoluwa Oyede and Alhaji Kamal Odejobi, the Chairman and Secretary of the group respectively, it stated that ‘’ If we are serious about realizing our age long desire to produce the next governor of Ogun State in 2019, elders of Ogun West must as a matter of urgency intervene in  the political struggle currently going on among Yewa/Awori politicians ahead of 2019 governorship race. We make this call because we are once again convinced that the presence of some unserious aspirants from the zone may again pave the way for another zone to snatch the governorship from Ogun West in 2019’’

The group explained further that ‘’ rather than this endless parade of numerous  aspirants including the contenders, the pretenders as well as the outright jesters, this is the time for Ogun West to sit down, prune its array of aspirants and settle for the man or woman who will champion the caurse of the much touted Yewa Agenda’’

The organization concluded by saying ‘’ It is our firm belief that the quartet of Gboyega Isiaka of PDP, Tolu Odebiyi, Suraj Adekunbi and Solomon Adeola all of All Progressives Congress, APC are the serious contenders and should therefore be seen as the possible candidates for the 2019 governorship contest from Ogun West. We call on Yewa elders to quickly commence the process of picking a consensus candidate from this group of four while others bury their ambitions and support any of the four’’

Meanwhile, Otunba Kolawole Lawal Mobolorunduro, the Commissioner for Forestry in the State and one of the politicians from Yewa land who had declared interest in the governorship race has faulted the stand of this group describing it as very parochial, mischievous and utter misrepresentation of fact.

Speaking with our Correspondent, KLM as he is fondly called disclosed that ‘’ I don’t even know of any of the governorship candidates that is as strong as I am when it comes to passion for Yewa Agenda. I had to resign early from Exxon Mobil after putting in about 20 years  to contest for the governorship slot in 2011 under PDP just because I want this Yewa Agenda to be realized. I have traversed the 226 wards of Ogun State to pursue this agenda as well as all the three senatorial districts. I am a very serious contender in this race and even if there is ever going to be a consensus candidate, I stand shoulder high above every other candidate. So, I strongly condemn this report for its biases and standing the truth on its head. I remain the candidate to beat anytime, anyday in this race’’.

Similarly, in a telephone conversation with our Correspondent, Hon. Akinlade Isiaq who recently dumped the opposition party to pursue his governorship ambition in the ruling party, APC explained that ‘’ I am sure it’s a sponsored report because going by my antecedent as a three term federal lawmaker  with firm grip on grassroots politics and someone who had contested for the governorship slot in the past, I am a very strong contender for this governorship race and will surely use all the godly means within my reach to actualize Yewa governorship ambition in 2019’’
