Ogoni Day: Eschew division, promote peace — Gov Fubara tasks Ogoni People

Barth Ndubuwah, Port Harcourt

Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has charged the people of Ogoni in the State to eschew division among themselves and be willing  to work with his administration to enthrone lasting peace in Ogoni land.

Sir Fubara gave the charge at the 31st Ogoni Day celebration that was held at the Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori Town in Khana Local Government Area of the State.

Speaking through his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, Governor Fubara  said his administration plans to urbanise communities in Ogoniland.

Such urbanisation, he said, will begin to manifest when the ongoing reconstruction of internal roads in Bori Town is seen and extended to other communities in the council.

“We do not joke with all the LGAs in the senatorial district and Ogoni bloc is a major bloc in this senatorial district.

“Bringing development to Ogoni is something that is top priority of this administration. You know that we have talked about electricity in Ogoni land. We have talked about security in Ogoni land and these are top priorities of this government,” the Governor said.

Governor Fubara pointed out the importance of a peaceful atmosphere to achieving the planned development in Ogoni land and enjoined them to embrace peace.

“I want to plead with everyone, let us put our hands together and bring peace to prevail across the State because without peace there will be unnecessary division. We don’t need that now,” he added.

Chairman of the occasion, Gbenemene Tai, HRM. King Samuel Nnee, said Ogoni day celebration avails them an opportunity to renew their resolve to jealously guide the freedom and right God has given to Ogoni people.

Also speaking, Khana Local Government Chairman, Dr. Thomas Bariere harped on the need for Ogoni people to unite, look inwards, harness their strength and work assiduously to achieve a better Ogoni land as envisaged.
