The Oba of Lagos, HRM Rilwan Akiolu, has appealed to the British government to assist Nigeria in writing off its foreign debt, emphasizing that such support is crucial for the nation’s growth.
This request was made on Wednesday during a visit by Captain Lindsey Wigmore of the British Royal Navy at the Oba’s palace in Lagos.
Akiolu praised the administrative legacy left by the British post-independence but criticized the Nigerian government for failing to build upon it.
He stated, “The British are wonderful in upholding the rule of law. Help us tell your government to see what they can do to assist in writing off our debt.”
The Oba praised the administrative skills of the British and articulated a vision for enhanced collaboration between Nigeria and Britain.
He encouraged British businesses to invest in Nigeria, asserting that they could benefit greatly by tapping into the country’s vast resources and market potential.
“Let them come and set up here. Use our products,” he urged, highlighting the local population’s capacity for production and innovation.
Addressing the pressing issues of governance and public service, the Oba reiterated the need for accountability and discipline among Nigerians.
“We should pray for our leaders, not to be cursing them,” he stated, calling for a shift in public sentiment towards supportive engagement with leadership. He lamented the misuse of taxpayer money and the need for stringent measures to protect public infrastructure.
The Oba shared insights from his tenure as a police commissioner, proposing security enhancements along major roadways to mitigate crime.
“Every 10 kilometres, there should be a police station, patrol, and walkie-talkie,” he advised, reinforcing the necessity for community involvement in safety measures.
He called on the media to promote constructive narratives rather than sensationalism, emphasizing that true reporting can contribute to national development.
In the same vein, the Oba of Lagos expressed optimism for Nigeria’s future, asserting that with cooperation and expertise, the nation can navigate its challenges effectively.
“By the grace of God Almighty, things are going to be better for us,” he affirmed, urging all stakeholders to work together for a brighter tomorrow.
