NUJ partners FRSC for safer roads in Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) pledges to partner the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to ensure safer roads in the state.

The  NUJ Bayelsa Council Chairman, Samuel Numonengi, gave the assurance when the Sector Commander, FRSC, Bayelsa,  Mr Chidiebere Nkwonta,  paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the council at the NUJ Press Centre in Yenagoa on Saturday.

According to Numonengi, the union is always ready to work with the FRSC to ensure that the corps succeeds in its duties to achieve accident -free roads through adequate reportage.

He commended the command for getting traders off major roads in the state and promptly responding to distress situations.

The NUJ chairman also called on the FRSC to intensify efforts at enlightening members of the public on road safety tips, saying that people learnt a lot from the corps’ programme on radio and television.

Earlier, the Sector Commander, Mr Chediebere Nkwonta, had called on journalists to support the command’s efforts to ensure safer roads in the state through the dissemination of it activities.

According to Nkwonta, the command is working tirelessly to enlighten and re-orientate members of the public on road safety behaviour.

He noted that much success would not be achieved without adequate media coverage which would bring about attitudinal change.

The sector commander, who disclosed that no fatal road accident was recorded in the state in the past two months, added that efforts at sensitisation would be sustained so that the roads would be safer for everyone.

He commended the friendly posture of the media in the state towards the corps and called for its sustenance.
