NSML expands seatime for NSDP cadets, trains 300, employs 100

NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML) has reported significant progress in creating sea time opportunities for Nigerian cadets, announcing that it has trained nearly 300 cadets under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) and has employed 100 of them.

NSML Managing Director, Abdulkadir Ahmed, made this known in Lagos on Monday during an event where the company also introduced its new logo.

Ahmed pointed out that despite the limited availability of seagoing vessels restricting sea berth placements, NSML remains dedicated to broadening opportunities for Nigerian cadets to acquire the necessary sea time experience.

He stated, “Nearly 300 NSDP cadets have gained experience aboard NSML vessels, with 200 completing their certifications, and 100 securing employment within NSML.

“The issue of sea berth availability is a global concern, but it is particularly pronounced in Nigeria due to the industry’s developing nature. The number of seagoing vessels remains relatively low.

“We are actively exploring additional avenues to increase berth spaces, allowing us to accommodate even more cadets.”

Beyond its cadet training initiatives, the NSML Managing Director reaffirmed the company’s commitment to contributing to the establishment of a reputable Nigerian ship registry.

When asked about the company’s stance on utilising the national ship registry, Ahmed underscored the necessity of developing a registry that aligns with international standards and enjoys worldwide recognition.

“The objective extends beyond merely registering a vessel. The fundamental purpose of a ship registry is to ensure global recognition, enabling vessels listed under it to operate internationally without restrictions.

“In the coming weeks or months, we anticipate notable progress, as we have been engaging with NIMASA. I can confidently say that the Director-General of NIMASA is fully committed to this goal. In all our discussions, he has demonstrated a strong determination to ensure that the Nigerian ship registry is not only functional but also achieves international credibility. We fully support this initiative.”

Ahmed also praised the improved security situation in the Gulf of Guinea, attributing the progress to the successful implementation of NIMASA’s Deep Blue Project.

He stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to sustain the enhanced security environment, cautioning that the situation could shift if vigilance is not maintained.

“We sincerely commend NIMASA for their achievements with the Deep Blue Project, as it has significantly strengthened security across the Gulf of Guinea,” he stated.

Addressing the unveiling of the company’s new logo, Ahmed explained that the updated visual identity aligns with the NLNG Group’s broader rebranding efforts, which commenced with NLNG’s rebranding in 2024.

He noted that the refreshed logo symbolises NSML’s commitment to collaboration, excellence, and sustainability within the maritime sector.

The new logo features an “advanced swivel” incorporating green, lemon, and blue hues.

The swivel represents NSML’s adaptability, continuous progress, and expanding role as a premier provider of integrated maritime services.

As part of the NLNG Group, the design also signifies NSML’s essential function in bridging energy production with global markets.
