The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Imo chapter, has urged the state government to immortalise late boxer, Ikechukwu Igboanugo who died during the just concluded National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta.
Newsmen that Igboanugo died shortly after his boxing bout against Gaby Amagor of Anambra in the 86kg heavyweight class.
He was said to have suffered serious injury during his encounter with his Anambra opponent and was rushed to Asaba hospital where he died.
The Chairman of the association, Everest Ezihe who made the call in statement on Thursday Owerri, said the late boxer died while representing Imo.
He said that concerted efforts should be made towards remembering him for his patriotism.
“He died not only representing Imo alone but also his fatherland hence the need to create an avenue to always remember him.
“It was because of his desire to win laurel for Team Imo that he lost his life.
“We are glad that Imo government has indicated interest to assist the family of the deceased while also shouldering the expenses for his burial but that may not be enough”, he said.
He appealed to the Gov. Hope Uzodimma to take a step further by immortalizing him so that every Imo sons and daughters will know that it pays to serve ones state with honour and dignity,”he said.
Ezihe also commiserate with the state government, the boxing association and lovers of the sport over the untimely death of Igboanugo.
He called on spirited citizens of the state to assist the family of the deceased.
