NSCDC prevents tanker explosion in Sokoto

A potential disaster was averted in Sokoto on Tuesday when a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit overturned at Dan Marna Filling Station in Gagi, Sokoto South Local Government Area, spilling fuel onto the road.

Swift intervention by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, prevented a fire outbreak. Officers promptly cordoned off the area, restricted movement, and stopped unauthorised individuals from attempting to scoop the highly flammable liquid.

At the scene, Sokoto State NSCDC Commandant UI Alfadarai, represented by Deputy Commandant Florence Awosan, reassured residents that all necessary measures were in place to control the situation.

“Our priority is safeguarding lives and property. Adequate personnel have been deployed to ensure public safety and prevent any potential explosion,” she said.

Firefighters and emergency responders collaborated with NSCDC operatives to neutralise hazards, while by midday, the remaining fuel was successfully evacuated, and the tanker was removed. Security personnel remained on-site for monitoring to ensure the area remained safe.

Residents of Gagi commended the NSCDC for their swift intervention, underscoring the importance of proactive security measures in preventing disasters. The NSCDC, in turn, urged the public to stay vigilant and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to public safety.
