NLO felicitates with Christian Chukwu on 70th birthday
The Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), on Tuesday, felicitated with former Super Eagles Coach and Captain, Christian Chukwu, on his 70th birthday.
Ebere Amaraizu, Director in-charge of South-East of the NLO, in an interview with a correspondent of the Newsmen in Enugu, said Chukwu has played significant roles in the lives of youths especially sportsmen and women in Nigeria.
”We are joining millions of soccer loving personalities, administrators, fans, coaches and veteran players to felicitate with Christain Chukwu who marked his 70th birthday on Jan. 4,” he said.
Amaraizu, who is also the National Coordinator of Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), said Chukwu over the years also displayed high level of patriotism to his fatherland.
“Chukwu, popularly known as Chairman, has contributed immensely in the placement of Nigeria name in the annals of history in sports especially football.
“He is been a role model to upcoming sports stars to discover their potentials devoid of involvement in cultism and other vices as well as to upcoming football coaches,’’ he said.
Amaraizu revealed that Chukwu, in his usual characteristic, was among professionals that offered great technical assistance to the Crime Busters FC, Enugu under Enugu State Police Command.
“We join millions of lovers of the round leather game in Enugu, Rangers International his traditional club-side and his family to wish him a very happy birthday and continual good health of mind and body,’’ he said.
Reports state that Chukwu, MFR, was born in Obe in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on Jan. 4, 1951.
As a player, he became the captain of Enugu Rangers football club and the Nigeria National Team in the late 1970s.
He was the first Nigerian captain to lift the African Nations Cup trophy after a 3–0 victory over Algeria in the final of the 1980 tournament.
Chukwu started his coaching career in Lebanon in the mid-1990s, before being appointed coach of the Kenya national team in 1998.
Later, from 2003 to 2005, he coached Nigeria, leading them to reach semifinals at the 2004 African Cup of Nations.
Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman, has been crowned Atalanta B.C.’s Player of the Season for 2023/24, successfully defending his title from the previous year.
The Nigerian forward emerged victorious in a fiercely competitive contest that required an overtime runoff and even extended to an Instagram profile showdown after the regular session ended in a tie.
Lookman’s impressive tally of 17 goals and 11 key passes across all competitions, making him the team’s second-best scorer and assist provider, solidified his claim to the ItalianOptic branded crown.

His contribution extended beyond his usual role, with seven goals in all competitions adding an extra dimension to his game.
Koopmeiners, a regular feature on the ItalianOptic podium throughout the season, claimed the bronze medal.
The Dutch midfielder’s impact was significant, with the club highlighting his playing time, “3930 minutes played in over 51 games as a further straw in the wind.”
His 22-goal contribution (15 scored and 7 assists) across all competitions underlined his importance to the team, with a particular knack for away goals, having “bagged 12 goals away from Bergamo.”
The statement congratulated Lookman for his feat, stating, “Kudos to Mola for his back-to-back Player of the Season.”
Former Cameroon international, Landry Nguemo, died in a traffic accident on Thursday, the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) said on its Facebook page.
“Fecafoot has just learned the news of the death of the former Indomitable Lion, Landry Nguemo, as a result of a traffic accident,” it posted.
The Yaounde-born midfielder played 42 times and scored three goals for Cameroon between 2006 and 2014, winning a runners-up medal at the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
He spent most of his club career in France, starting as a 16-year-old at the academy of AS Nancy-Lorraine.
He graduated to the first team winning the 2006 French League Cup before leaving for Bordeaux.
Between 2011 and 2014, he played for the Girondins, winning the French Cup in 2003 before moving to Saint-Etienne in 2014.
All three clubs posted tributes on X with Nancy, where he returned as a coach after his playing days, proclaiming its “immense sadness”.
He also had stints in Turkey and Norway before returning to the Nancy Under 16s, “with the desire to pass on to the kids his knowledge and experience”, said the club.
