NLC president calls for policy consistency in education sector

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero has urged the Federal Government to ensure policy consistency in the education sector, citing the recent HND/BSC dichotomy challenge as a result of policy inconsistency.

Speaking at the 2024 International Teachers Day event in Abuja on Friday, organised by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Ajaero emphasised the need to revisit education policies and consider education as self-sufficient.

Ajaero stressed the importance of technical education, stating that HND should not be removed.

He also tasked the Ministry of Education with adequate budgeting to develop facilities and ensure job security.

Furthermore, he pledged to support the union in demanding better welfare for teachers nationwide.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the N40,000 minimum wage for civil servants, Ajaero advocated for a wage that covered basic needs.

“We need a wage that will help everyone pay their bills,” he said.

To achieve this, Ajaero recommended that COEASU collaborated with the Ministry to secure a better budget from the National Assembly.

Additionally, Ajaero appealed to the Ministry to address the concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and honour the agreement signed to prevent strikes.
