The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters, Abuja has initiated an investigation into reports of alleged brutality involving Immigration officers against personnel of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Agency (OYSRTMA) and a journalist from Galaxy Television, Seun Falomo.

Deputy Comptroller of Immigration and spokesperson for the service, Kenneth Udo,  revealed that the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, has taken decisive action to uncover the truth behind the incident. The probe is in response to disturbing news circulating about the alleged assault on OYSRTMA staff and Falomo by Immigration officers.

According to Udo, an incident report from the Zone F Headquarters of NIS in Ibadan, Oyo State, indicated that the altercation stemmed from OYSRTMA personnel attempting to apprehend a retired Assistant Comptroller of Immigration for violating traffic regulations in the Onipepeye area (Old Ife road). The situation escalated when the retired officer’s son, who was driving the vehicle, suffered a fractured leg during the altercation.

Despite conflicting accounts of the incident, Udo emphasised that the NIS is deeply concerned about the incident and is committed to uncovering the truth. CGI Nandap has ordered a thorough investigation and stated that the service will not hesitate to sanction any officers found to have violated the law or code of conduct.

CGI Nandap also appealed for public understanding and emphasized the importance of collaboration with other government agencies. She reiterated her commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity in fulfilling the NIS’s core mandates of border security and migration management.

The investigation underscores the NIS’s dedication to accountability and maintaining positive relationships with partner agencies and the public. As the probe progresses, stakeholders await the findings to ensure justice and adherence to legal and ethical standards within the Immigration Service.
