Nine arrested in connection with killing of police officers in Delta

Nine persons have been apprehended by the police in the ongoing investigations into the tragic killings of six of its officers in Ughelli, Delta state.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, disclosed this while giving an update on the incident during a management meeting of the Force.

The brutal incident, which occurred on February 23 sent shockwaves across the region and the nation at large. The slain officers were ambushed and fatally attacked in the dense forests of Ohoro, situated within the Ughelli North Local Government Area.

“The arrest of these nine suspects marks a significant breakthrough in the quest for justice and accountability,” he said.

The IG said, while the arrests represent a notable step forward, challenges persist as six other suspects believed to be connected to the killings remain at large, complicating efforts to fully resolve the case.

The ongoing manhunt underscores the determination of law enforcement agencies to apprehend all individuals involved in the heinous crime and bring them to justice.

This development comes amidst heightened tension following a separate attack in the same region, where 17 military personnel lost their lives during a peacekeeping mission in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area.

The nation mourned the loss of these brave soldiers, spurring widespread calls for swift and decisive action against the perpetrators.

In response, military authorities have vowed to redouble their efforts to track down the masterminds behind the attack on their personnel, emphasising their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s security.

President Bola Tinubu’s decision to confer posthumous national awards on the fallen soldiers and provide educational scholarships for their children underscores the nation’s solemn recognition of their sacrifice.

“As the investigations continue and efforts to restore peace and security in Delta State intensify, the arrest of the nine suspects represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the slain police officers. It serves as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of law enforcement agencies in their mission to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of citizens.
