The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has conducted a training session for its directors and senior management staff on the “Balanced Scorecard Performance Management System.”
According to a statement, the session, held on Wednesday was organised in collaboration with management consulting firm Balanced Scorecard West Africa.
While declaring the session open, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof Charles Anosike, highlighted the agency’s focus on improving performance management.
“We are starting a new journey at NiMet as we prepare to roll out a balanced scorecard performance management system. It is one of the global management tools that organizations use to translate strategy into performance,” he said.
Anosike noted that the balanced scorecard system enhances an organisation’s ability to communicate its strategy effectively to stakeholders and focuses on value creation through innovation and quality service delivery.
“Value-creation activities in organizations are no longer strictly measured in tangible things and fixed assets. Instead, value lies in the ideas of people, service delivery, supplier relationships, key information databases, and cultures capable of innovation. We can come together at NiMet to solve our problems and create value in never-imagined ways,” he added.
He urged participants to embrace performance management as a core foundation for achieving the agency’s objectives, emphasising the critical role of execution and development in the success of any strategy.
“Strategy dictates the path forward. It is not the change effort itself that is likely to cause the failure. It is always the execution and development, the implementation, execution, and development,” he added.
Fire razes shops, offices in Plateau
A fire broke out at the Old Airport Junction in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on Wednesday, destroying several shops and offices and leaving business owners and traders to assess their losses.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire began around 4:00 pm, sparking urgent calls to the fire services in both Jos South and Jos North Local Government Areas.
“I came out of my office and saw fire everywhere. I don’t know the exact cause, but I immediately contacted the fire service. Fortunately, they mobilised their teams, who are currently working to put out the flames,” said one witness, John Michael.
The Chairman of Jos South Local Government Area, Mr Silas Dung, confirmed the incident and said, “I have just been informed about the fire, and I am currently at the scene to assess the situation.”
An official from the Jos Fire Service, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that their team had been quickly dispatched to the scene.
“Once we received the report, our team was sent to the location. We have managed to extinguish the fire to prevent it from spreading further,” the official said.
This fire follows a similar incident last month at the Katako Timber Market in Jos North Local Government Area, where over 107 shops were destroyed, leaving more than 200 people—mainly carpenters—devastated. Reports indicated that goods worth over ¦ 1 billion were lost in that fire
