NiMet predicts 3-day cloudiness, thunderstorms from Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted cloudiness and thunderstorms from Monday to Wednesday across the country.

NiMet`s weather output released in Abuja predicted cloudy skies over the northern region on Monday with prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Kebbi and Taraba states in the morning hours.

According to it, thunderstorms with strong winds and moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Gombe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, Taraba and Adamawa states later in the day.

“Cloudy conditions are expected over the North central region with chances of morning thunderstorms with rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue and Kogi Sates.

“ Further into the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Niger, Kwara, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory and Plateau States.

“Cloudy conditions are anticipated over the inland states of the South and coast with chances of intermittent rains over parts of Ebonyi, Imo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Cross River states,“ it said.

The agency anticipated intermittent rains over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra,  Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Imo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states later in the day.

NiMet forecast sunny skies on Tuesday with patches of clouds over the northern region in the morning hours with prospects of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Taraba states.

It predicted isolated thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna state later in the day.

According to it, cloudy atmosphere is anticipated over North central region during morning hours with thunderstorms and moderate rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Benue and Plateau states later in the day.

Nimet envisaged cloudy skies over the inland cities of the South and the coastal areas in the morning hours.

It predicted intermittent rains over parts of Oyo, Anambra, Enugu, Osun, Ekiti, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states later in the day.

According to NiMet, cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is expected over the northern region on Wednesday with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Borno, Kano, Yobe and Jigawa states in the morning hours.

The agency anticipated thunderstorms over parts of Yobe, Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi and Kebbi states later in the day.

“Cloudy atmosphere is anticipated over the North central region during the morning hours. Further into the day, thunderstorms are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Plateau states.

“Cloudy skies are expected over the inland cities of the South and the coastal areas during the morning hours.

“ Later in the day, intermittent rains are expected over parts of Edo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Ondo, Anambra, Ogun, Cross River, Lagos, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states,“ it said.

According to NiMet, for areas where thunderstorms are expected, strong winds are likely to precede the rains and as such, trees, electric poles, unsecured objects and weak buildings may be felled.

The agency advised the public to be cautious and stay in-door, especially during heavy rainfall to avoid being struck by lightning.

“ All Airline operators are advised to avail themselves of weather reports periodically from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

“Moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash flood. The public is advised to take necessary caution by clearing drainages,“ it said

According to the disaster risk managers, agencies and individuals should be proactive, to avert loss of lives and property during rainy season.
