NIMC warns against unauthorised NIN card printing
By Blessing Emmanuel
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has raised an alarm over the illegal printing of unauthorized National Identification Number (NIN) cards by cyber cafes, individuals, and organizations, warning that such actions violate the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.
In a statement signed by Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of the Corporate Communications Unit, the Commission emphasized that it has not authorized anyone or any organization to print NIN cards as a substitute for the official NIMC General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).
It noted that some of these unauthorized operators charge unsuspecting Nigerians exorbitant fees for fake NIN cards that hold no legal value.
NIMC clarified that the NIN slip remains the only legal means of identification and must be verified upon presentation.
The Commission urged the public to desist from printing and using unauthorized NIN cards, warning that security agencies have been directed to arrest and prosecute anyone involved in the illegal practice.
To address public concerns, NIMC announced plans to launch an Improved General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC), which will serve as both a physical identification document and a payment card. The new card will be powered by AfriGO, a local payment platform.
