NIMASA remits N199bn revenue to FG coffers in six years

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) said it contributed N199.42 billion into the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the federal government in the last six years.

Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, who disclosed this during a capacity building workshop organised for members of the House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration in Lagos on Friday, said the revenue was generated between 2018 and 2023.

Jamoh said the agency, despite not being a revenue generating agency, has consistently remitted funds to the federal government as part of its contribution to economic development of the country.

Giving a breakdown of the revenue, Jamoh said the agency remitted N21.04billion in 2018, N24.75 billion in 2019 and N31.72billion in 2020.

In 2021, he said the agency contributed the sum of N37.93billion, N42.08billion in 2022 and 41.90billion in 2023.

In the area of human capital development, Jamoh informed the lawmakers that under the NIMASA Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) a total of 2,476 cadets enrolled in the programme from 2009 till date out of which 979 have graduated and obtained their certificates of competency (COC).

He also disclosed that 375 NSDP cadets are currently undergoing seatime training while 26 are undergoing their Certificate of Competency training.

He added that 476 cadets have graduated with paid employment while 438 are undergoing shore based training.

Jamoh said within the review period, a total of 12 beneficiaries of the NSDP programme died while 153 were withdrawn from the programme.

Giving an update on the NIMASA floating dock, Jamoh said the agency had commenced its installation and in the next three months, the floating dock will generate employment and revenue for the country.
