Nigeria’s insecurity challenge is political, Osun ex-Commissioner for Information
Abimbola Abatta, Osogbo
A former Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Osun State, Sunday Akere, has described the insecurity challenge in Nigeria as political.
This is just as he called on the federal government to be sincere in attending to the problems that confront the nation.
He noted that despite the promises to get rid of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, the government has not been able to suppress them, adding that this has become a mirage.
In his words, “We begin to ask who are the people supporting and funding these crises.
“I once read an analysis that when a terrorist group is strong enough to bring down an air force jet, then we are in a war situation.”
Akere, who is also an APC Chieftain, said the government must be proactive in listening to the yearnings and aspirations of people, which according to him is the solution to the question of restructuring.
According to him, “If the government does not want the nation to divide, they should reduce the power at the centre. The power at the centre is just too much.
“One should be bothered about the nation Nigeria and the way things are turning to. Before it used to be agitations for restructuring. But today, people are agitating for avenues to form their own nation.
“The leaders and the national assembly should listen to these agitations. The national assembly should conduct a referendum and we should have restructured. We are in a situation whereby the majority are working but the minority are enjoying, everyone is bothered.”
He further said, “I am beginning to believe that the insecurity challenge in Nigeria is political and we must face the reality. When we were preparing for the 2015 election, we promised to get rid of Boko Haram, but today it has become a mirage. We can’t seem to suppress them. And we begin to ask who are the people supporting and funding these crises.
“Jailbreak has become a daily occurrence. The government must do something about this. Our borders are so porous that anybody can come in. No one can even evaluate the number of ammunition in our care.”
The APC chieftain noted that the government must be sincere and do the needful.
According to him, “Are we really sincere about what we want to do? Buhari campaigned on security, education, economy, corruption in 2015. But which one has he been able to achieve in the past 6 years? We should just pray that things will change for the better.”
