Every October 1st comes with mixed feelings for Nigerians. Having experienced colonial rule, military upheavals and democratic rule, Nigerians have gone through different phases of government to achieve the goal of peace, justice and prosperity reigning in the land as echoed in the National anthem.

Ordinarily, six decades of freedom from colonial imperialism and political slavery ought to be celebrated with pageantry but the current situation of Nigeria does not warrant such.

For the government and for many Nigerians, they see little or nothing to celebrate about a nation that is rapidly degenerating into a failed state.

Several years after independence, the nation hasn’t experienced much growth in virtually every sector but only retrogression. For sectors that seemed to be performing, one political or economic misfortune happened impeding its growth.

Ravaged by insecurity, unemployment, political uncertainty as well as the insecurity of lives and property, many citizens fear that the benefits of independence have eluded the country.

However, amidst the depressing situation Nigerians over the years have demonstrated high tenacity and endurance to build the nation of their dreams. This is despite the brain drain and ‘japa syndrome’ that has plagued the nation.

Seen in recent times protests, demonstrations and private citizens CSR initiatives fill the gaps that Government has refused to fill. Nigerians have continued to demonstrate hope in building a nation that works through various times.

In fact, this has turned out to be a positive attribution for Nigerians in the eyes of job recruiters globally identifying the “Never give up” spirit as a resourceful tool for pushing an organisations objectives.

For a nation that has gotten used to grand promises being made every election cycle for 63 years, the people have developed tough skin to forge ahead whether or not Government plays its role.

As Nigeria marks its Independence today, the Tinubu administration which was elected in February 2023 has promised to deliver “Renewed Hope” to Nigerians.

The President has at different times urged Nigerians to endure the pains his policies have brought on Nigerians, noting that it is for a greater future.

He has appealed to Nigerians for patience and understanding, assuring them that the hardships of the moment will eventually give way for a more prosperous, equitable and inclusive economy.

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday restated his administration’s commitment to eliminating poverty, terrorism and all forms of criminality in Nigeria.

Already, the Nigerian leader who is also Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, said the administration is currently implementing programmes and policies that would empower Nigerians to combat the challenges of poverty, criminality and terrorism.

Tinubu, who was represented by his deputy, Vice President Kashim Shettima, spoke during the passing-out parade of Cadets of the 70 Regular Course, Direct Short Service Course 27 (Army) and Direct Short Service Course 31 (Air Force) of the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, in Kaduna.

Reading the President’s address titled, ‘The Heroes of Nigeria’s Path to Prosperity and Security,’ at the passing-out parade, Shettima said, “Every day, every minute, we are reminded of the consequences of economic and social disintegration around us.

“This is why we favour cooperation and the formation of bilateral and multilateral alliances to create opportunities for our people.

“We are implementing programmes and policies to empower our citizens to combat the challenges of poverty, criminality, and terrorism.

“From preparing for the food security crisis triggered by the Russian-Ukrainian war, to responding to banditry attacks on farmers, natural flood disasters, and the repercussions of military coups, this administration has remained vigilant in devising solutions to mitigate their impact and enhance national security.”

As part of moves to deal decisively with criminal elements, Tinubu noted that his government has embarked on a new era in the country’s national defence and security strategy.

This, he said, would be driven by a resolute commitment to confront the substantial threats and challenges that confront the country within the West African sub-region.

“I have directed all heads of defence and security institutions to unite in their efforts to protect our nation’s integrity and well-being, and as Chairman of the ECOWAS, we are diligently working to enhance our regional conflict management and development mechanisms.

“To forge a path towards greater peace, stability, and progress across West Africa and beyond is not negotiable,” he added.

The President noted, however, that in tackling poverty inflicted on Nigerians by activities of the terror groups, he would treat every region equally and give them a sense of belonging in his government.

He stated, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, justice is the mainstay of prosperity, and so we are going to be fair to each region.

“Whether in tackling the secessionist elements disrupting the peace and economic activities of the good people of the South-East or doubling up our efforts in winning the counter-insurgency in the North East, and whether in pursuing normalcy in the North-West or in making the farmer-herder crises a thing of the past in the North-Central, every group will be treated as equal and given a sense of belonging in our government.

“While I acknowledge that we have made bold decisions to bolster our economy, even as some developed economies face the threat of recession, our commitment remains resolute.

“We are intensifying our efforts to implement tangible measures that will alleviate the hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates.

“Our immediate actions, such as reducing taxes on strategic manufacturing industries, distributing grains from the national reserve to vulnerable demographics, providing fertilizer and farm inputs, and extending soft loans to small and medium-scale industries, all serve as a clear message to our nation.

“We stand firmly with our citizens, determined to guide our country towards a path of accelerated economic growth and opportunities, where no one lives on handouts.”

The President further said he was proud of the devotion and dignity with which the NDA and its alumni have safeguarded Nigeria, noting that the passing-out parade was not just a ceremony to honour the transition of the graduands to a more active phase of duty to their fatherland.

According to him, the ceremony “stands as a symbol of our enduring commitment to the ideals of patriotism and investment in our human capital.”

Meanwhile, the Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has said Nigeria is celebrating its 63rd independence at a crossroads.

According to him, the nation which is yet to attain its full potentials has so much to be grateful for, especially for the industry of its youths in various fields, whose achievements have led to the hoisting of the national flag across the globe.

Atiku said this in his Independence Day message to Nigerians, in Abuja, on Saturday.

The former Vice President and Wazirin Adamawa explained that this year’s Independence Day “is coming at a time when the country is at a crossroads in many aspects of our national lives.

“Sixty-three years ago, when this great country acquired independence, it was upon the promise of abundant prosperity and the principle of social justice.

“As a nation, we have continued to struggle to manifest the dreams of our founding fathers in upholding the promises of shared prosperity and social justice.

“We have encountered great moments when the flag of our dear country flew tall on the global stage through the industry of our sportsmen and women, the prolific distinction of our academia and the top notch artistry of Nigerian talents in the global music scene.

“The talents and doggedness of young Nigerians who have refused to give up on the country are the inspiration for a greater future that we celebrate today.

“The energy of the Nigerian youth is a formidable force in the consternation of manpower and skills that power the global economy.

“Across the globe, and in various fields of human endeavour, the youth of this country have proven to have the competence to rival any of their peers from any part of the world.

“That success – the gallantry of our youth – is the primal element of what we celebrate today as a nation.”

He went on to say, “Therefore, for me, the challenge before us all is in ensuring that the political leadership in the country that we call home should be worthy of our pride as a people and not of telling embarrassment.

“Our democracy has triumphed so far due to the fidelity of our conviction that a democracy, when properly nurtured, should bring out the best in us and of us.

“As Nigerians, we are all not unfamiliar with the hardships in the economy, security, and other vital aspects of our society.

“While I enjoin us all to submit our strengths in faith to the Almighty God, we must be prepared to do our best to pull the country back from this point of uncertainty to a place of common safety.

“I congratulate fellow Nigerians, alongside friends and well wishers of our dear country across the globe, and wish you a happy Independence Day.

“God bless you all, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
