Nigeria Police declare man wanted for engaging in homosexuality
The Nigeria Police Force has declared a resident of ljaiye, a community in Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State, Jamiu Abayomi Animashaun for offences relating to homosexuality.
This was contained in a Special Gazette Police Bulletin issued by the Authority of the Inspector General of Police and marked DIV. S/N 117/8/2023.
Animashaun was said to have been wanted by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department Headquarters (SCIID) of the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State for being a gay.
The notice, which was dated August 4, 2023, has the photograph of Animashaun and urged members of the public with information on his whereabouts to approach the nearest police station for report.
The public notice was signed by ASP Kelechi Onu for Deputy Commissioner of Police, State CID, Ogun State.
It reads, “This is to inform the general public that the above name (Jamiu Abayomi Animashaun) whose photograph appears above resides in ljaiye, Abeokuta Ogun State, have been declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force.
“He’s been wanted for indulging in the act of homosexuality (Gay) which is contrary to the provision of the same-sex marriage (Prohibition) Act 2013 and punishable with fourteen years imprisonment. It was reported that he was caught with Samuel Olagoke by one Mathew in the ijaiye community. Further efforts to trace and locate his whereabouts were futile as he was said to have absconded to another location to evade arrest and the wrath of the community youths.
“Consequently, members of the public with useful information that might lead to his arrest are advised to report to the nearest police station.”
