Nigeria hits 99%OPEC quota as crude oil output rises to 1.48mbpd
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has reported a significant improvement in the country’s crude oil production, reaching 99 per cent of its Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota in April 2025.
According to a report titled Crude Oil and Condensate Production April 2025, issued by the commission on Monday, Nigeria’s average daily crude oil output rose to 1.48 million barrels per day (mbpd), up from 1.40 mbpd recorded in March.
The report stated, “The average crude oil production was 99 per cent of the OPEC quota (1.5 mbopd).”
During the same period, total daily production, including condensates, averaged 1.68 million barrels of oil per day (mbopd). The lowest daily output recorded was 1.60 mbpd, while the peak production reached 1.73 mbopd.
This marks a recovery from March 2025, when production had dipped to 93 per cent of the OPEC target. The commission noted that in March, Nigeria produced an average of 1.40 million barrels per day, comprising both crude oil and condensate volumes. Peak and lowest combined production for that month stood at 1.76 mbopd and 1.46 mbopd respectively.
Although the NUPRC did not officially state the reasons for the earlier decline in March, industry sources have attributed the drop in output to operational disruptions in Rivers State during the reporting period.
February 2025 had also seen a setback in production levels, with a 5 per cent decline compared to January. The average output in February was 1.67 million barrels per day, falling from January’s 1.73 million bopd. This drop was largely linked to maintenance works on the Trans Niger Pipeline, which connects to the Bonny export terminal.
A source at NUPRC, speaking anonymously to journalists at the time, explained that the decline in February was primarily due to repairs on a segment of the Trans Niger Pipeline and a fire incident at one of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) evacuation points.
NUPRC had released its official production figures for February earlier in the year, confirming the operational challenges faced by the sector.
