Osun monarch, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has commended the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS for the swift response aimed at truncating the military coup d’etat in Niger Republic.
Oba Akanbi also described the ECOWAS voice and sanctions against the Nigerien coup plotters as a strength for Africa’s democracy.
The monarch also called on the plotters to respect the community’s order by reinstating President Mohamed Bazoum.
Oluwo, who gave this commendation in a statement made available through his Press Secretary, Alli Ibraheem on Monday also advocated for stricter penalties to be meted out to the plotters since border closures were not enough.
The penalties he held would serve as a deterrent to would-be coup plotters in other African countries.
“The leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are commended for their swift response to truncate the military takeover in Niger Republic. The sanctions-border closures and the ultimatum are laudable measures by the community”
“I urge the community to ensure stricter penalties are also meted on the coup plotters. No one is greater than all of us. The combined forces of the Niger Republic cannot dictate for Africa. To serve as a deterrent, they must be made to face the wrath of the law.
“Whatever happens to one of us must be treated as if it were all of us. Africa’s democracy must be strengthened. ECOWAS has demonstrated a high sense of responsibility. I drum my support for its leadership and democracy in Africa.”
