NIEEE to install Akan as new National Chairman

As part of its mandates to deliver effectively a constitutionally structured institute and to promote professionalism for the sustainability and development of the nation, the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, (NIEEE) is set to instate Engr. Michael Akan as the new National Chairman of the Institute alongside other National Executive Committee Members on 19th February, 2022 in Abuja.

The inaugural ceremony will be combined with the 2021 Prize Award Ceremony of the National Engineering Science and Technology Essay Competition, NESTEC by 10am at the NAF Conference Center and Suites Abuja as Engr. Michael Akan takes over the mantle of leadership from his predecessor, Engr. Kings Adeyemi who doubles as the Chief Host of the event.

The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) was established in 1984 as a group of COREN registered Electrical Engineers.

Today, NIEEE houses all the specialties of Electrical Engineering disciplines and currently has chapters in 28 cities across all the geo-political zones of the country.

For effective operation, NIEEE is constitutionally structured into three subdivisions of Electrical Engineering – Power Engineering, Telecoms & Computer Engineering and Instrumentation, Control and Automation sections.

The mission of NIEEE is to promote professional competence and excellence among members through innovative contribution and development of sustainable solutions to challenging engineering problems by deploying efficient technologies and systems for the benefit of mankind.

Engr. Akan Michael MNSE, FNIEEE had his tertiary education at the Federal University of Technology – FUT Minna where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1998. He was posted to Oturpko, Benue State where he carried out his one year mandatory National Youth Service Corp Scheme, NYSC

While still in school in 1993, he took up a job with Zhakem Construction which later aided his career path in Instrumentation and Control engineering. He later moved on to work with ABG Communication in Minna.

After his NYSC, he saw the need to join Aicetec in 2000 where he was exposed to oil majors and independent marketers in the construction and maintenance of oil facilities. In 2005 he joined FMC Engineering Limited as a director and he is on the board of other companies including Blue Apple.

In 2012 he obtained an Advance Certificate of University of Lagos in Project Management.

Meanwhile, Engr. Akan began his professional career in 1995, when admitted into the Nigerian Society of Engineers as Student Member with the Ref No. 0063/95 and became a Graduate Member of NSE in 2001 with Reg. No 004160. He joined Electrical Division in 2000 and in 2005 he became a Corporate Member of NSE with Reg No. 15440.

In 2006, he became a registered member of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN with Reg. No 12861 as an Engineer.

Due to his  diligence and commitment, he was given the opportunity to serve in NIEEE Lagos Chapter in various capacities and assumed the position of the Chairman of Lagos Chapter between 2013 and 2015. In 2013, he was co-opted to the National Executive Committee to report on NIEEE Chartered status.

While still serving his tenure as Lagos Chapter Chairman, in 2015 he was called to national service as Assistant National General Secretary and became National General Secretary in 2016/2017. In 2018/2019 he was co-opted again as National Executive Committee member and was elected as Deputy National Chairman to serve in 2020/21.

Engr. Akan Michael has served in several Committees both in NIEEE and NSE and he’s currently a member of Board of Trustees of NIEEE. He has been a member of the Ikeja branch of NSE since 2002.

He was also a member of the Nigerian Contract Monitoring Coalition, which monitored World Bank sponsored projects in Lagos under Project Monitoring Unit of PHCN for NSE Headquarters between 2013/2014. He has served as a member of Codes and Standards Committee, NSE Headquarters between 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively.

In 2014, he was nominated by the Nigerian Society of Engineers as a  member of the Presidential Committee on Electric Meter Implementation  of Power and Mines, set up by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR.

Engr. Akan was also a member of the National Content Committee of Nigerian Society of Engineers 2016 and has co-presented technical papers at Fora such as International Conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunications, ICEPT and Nigerian Society Engineers AGM.

He is a strong advocate of Engineering Excellence through Engineering in Standard and STEM. Since 2012 he has been on the Technical Committees and Work Groups of IEC/SON representing NIEEE.

His also the promoter of National Engineering Codes and Standards Group (NECSG) and Coordinator IEC-Young Professional Mentorship Program. He was recently nominated into the International Electro-Technical Commission- Nigeria National Committee (IEC-NNC) as a member.

Indeed, he is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) advocate, promoter/convener of the National Engineering Science and Technology Essay Competition (NESTEC) since 2019.

In 2021, Engr Akan Michael was appointed as a member of  Board of Directors (Technical) for the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Minna  an Institute under the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) by President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.
