NGO urges Nigerians to support govt’s efforts in curtailing COVID-19

The Indomitable Youth Organisation (IYO), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has called on Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s efforts in curtailing the spread of the COVID-19.

The NGO’s Project Director, Dr Bright Oniovokukor, made the appeal in an interview with the Newsmen in Benin on Tuesday.

Oniovokukor said it was regrettable that some citizens were still doubting and peddling fake news about the spread of the disease in the country.

He said “COVID-19 is real, let no one be deceived and the fact that many are finding it difficult to comply with the guidelines does not make it not to be real.

“Some persons have been infected and they recovered too, we have people who are receiving care at home.

“Those who are sending fake news about COVID-19 should stop that because they are not helping the system.’’

According to him, some Nigerians are more concerned about the social and economic effects the pandemic is having on the people rather than complying with the COVID-19 guidelines.

“Some persons have expressed the fear that the effects of hunger are worse than that of COVID-19.

“We all need to support the various efforts that the government has put in place to control spread of the virus.

“This is very important at this time when contact tracing has become more difficult than ever.

“Many people at this time cannot actually tell how many persons they have had contact with in the past 24 hours.

“The only person you can trust is yourself, hence everyone must take responsibility for their actions.’’

He urged citizens to take the responsibility of educating some people out there still doubting the existence of COVID-19.
