NGO trains 300 families on prevention of drug abuse

A Non Governmental Organization , Drug Free Arewa Movement (DFAM) said it had trained 300 families in Kaduna on prevention of drug abuse by youth.

The lead convener of the organisation , Mr Ibrahim Gombe, said this in an interview with the newsmen Thursday in Kaduna.

He said the organisation was established in 2018 with the objective of reducing the rate of drug abuse among youth in the 19 northern states.

“This is part of efforts to achieve SDGs goal 3.5, which is talking about preventing and reducing intake of drugs among youths by 2030.

“We have been running a lot of programmes and have achieved some of our objectives,” he said.

According to him, the programmes assist parents in detecting the involvement of their children in drug abuse at early stage.

He stressed the need to be proactive in handling the social menace , especially with the increase in number of youth involved in the act.

Gombe said the organisation had also introduced drug-free clubs in some  secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.schools, just as it trained members of some volunteer organisations.

He explained that that the programme was a community-based project where young people and community leaders were engaged and trained on drug  prevention of drug abuse.

He listed some of the communities that benefitted within Kaduna metropolis to  Barnawa, Sabo, Tudun Wada, Rigachikun and Unguwan Rimi.
