New approach to teaching out-of-school children adopted by Bauchi govt

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has introduced a special teaching approach for out-of-school children in Bauchi State, aimed at improving their numeracy and literacy skills.

Chief of the Bauchi Field Office, Dr Tushar Rane, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Misau, Misau Local Government Area.

According to Dr Rane, the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), approach will ensure that children, irrespective of the class they stopped schooling at, can be reintegrated and put together in one classroom and taught basic education.

He said teachers were being trained on how to handle the teaching methods, including the use of objects to depict what the children already know for easy understanding.

Meanwhile, the UNICEF Education Specialist, Bauchi Field Office, Mr Abdurahman Ado, said that TaRL was introduced to improve the numeracy and literacy skills of primary school pupils.

“One of the designated schools for the programme here is the Central Primary School, Misau, where a block of classrooms had been set aside for the teaching and learning for out-of-school children who chose to return to school.

“The programme is done in collaboration with the School Based Management Committee which is saddled with the responsibilities of the day-to-day running of affairs of the school.”
