NEMA presents relief materials to flood, windstorm victims in Ekiti
NEMA presented relief materials to 1,000 victims of floods and other disasters in Ekiti on Wednesday.
Reports state that the materials included grains, mats, and clothing and food items.
Head of NEMA Operations in Ekiti and Ondo States, Mr. Olarewaju Kadiri, who presented the materials at Ado-Ekiti, said they were sent by the Federal Government to cushion the effect of floods.
“The Federal Government sent the materials in consideration of the fact that while they won’t ameliorate all the sufferings of the victims, they would cushion the effect of the disaster.
“We hope that before the year runs out, the Federal Government would send more relief materials,’’ he said.
In her remarks, the Deputy Governor of Ekiti, Chief Monisade Afuye, commended the Federal Government and NEMA for the materials.
“I want you to know that the intervention from the Federal Government cannot compensate for the traumatic experiences and the material losses of persons affected by the disaster.
“The materials would go a long way toward reducing their sufferings, however. In the light of this, I implore beneficiaries to value whatever materials are given to them.
“I wish to remind and encourage the general public to avoid practices that can cause natural and man-induced disasters in their environments.
“Our people should desist from building houses on waterways or close to streams and rivers, or under high-tension power lines.
“We should also avoid the terrible habit of dropping refuse in drainages during rainfall. These are, perhaps, the most common causes of flooding in this part of the country,’’ Afuye said.
