The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has handed over 16,169 litres of liquid gel fertiliser to the Benue State Government.
The Director General (DG) Mr. Zubaida Umar performed the official handover of the liquid fertiliser on Thursday at the headquarters of Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), in Makurdi disclosed that the fertiliser was under the National Food Security Council – Emergency Agricultural Intervention (NFSC – EAl) for states affected by 2018 conflicts.
Represented by Zonal Director, NEMA, North Central, Mr Bashir Garga, he maintained that the fertiliser was a balance of the 2018 fertiliser meant for States affected by conflicts.
He stated that NEMA commenced distribution of NPK fertiliser to affected farmers in 2020.
He further explained that they could not continue due to the changes in the regulations by the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) which led to the termination of the contract between NEMA and the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) for the supply of NPK fertiliser to beneficiaries’ States.
According to him, the Liquid Gel Fertiliser being supplied was a replacement for the balance of NPK fertiliser approved for Benue State under the NFSC – EAI for states affected by 2018 conflicts.
He further explained that the liquid fertiliser supplied was from certified and licensed suppliers of Liquid Gel Fertilisers.
The DG stated that it was the intention of President Bola Tinubu that the fertiliser should reach the beneficiaries before the expiration of the cropping season.
“Your Excellency, it is my pleasure to confirm that as of today the supply of 16,169 litres of liquid gel fertiliser for Benue State has been completed.
“I am here on behalf of the DG NEMA to formerly handover this consignment to Benue State Government for onward distribution to beneficiary farmers for their use in the current cropping season.” He said.
Responding, the Governor of Benue State Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia commended President Tinubu through NEMA for always remembering the people of Benue especially in their difficult moments.
Represented by his Principal Private Secretary (PPS) Dr Emmanuel Chenge, assured that the fertiliser would reach the target IDPs and directed the State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to enlighten the beneficiaries on how to apply the liquid fertiliser for maximum output.
He further urged Benue people to produce what they eat, especially the workers, adding that their salaries alone may not sustain them adequately.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Sir James Iorpuu revealed that most IDPs have returned to their farms in the State.
