NEMA advises Taraba residents to implement modern waste management practices

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Wednesday advised Taraba residents to adopt modern waste management system to check flooding in the state.

Mr Ayuba Ladan, Head of NEMA, Yola Operations Office gave the advice at a one day sensitisation Workshop on Proper Waste Management  Camping and Flood Preparedness for Schools, Communities and Public Spaces in Jalingo.

Ladan also advised residents to avoid dumping of solid waste and refuse in drainages, noting that the effect of flood was adverse to human existence.

He noted that waste recycling was the most common technic for waste management globally.

Ladan, who  identified loss of lives, environmental degradation among many disasters as some of the effects of flooding, cautioned residents, who lived along river banks to relocate to safer places to avoid loss of lives at any incidence of flood disaster.

He expressed the concern of the agency, especially as in matters on flood disaster, adding that Taraba was one of the frontline states that were  prone to flood disaster in Nigeria.

On his part, Mr Siman Giwa, Director, Planing, Research and Statistics, Taraba  Ministry of Waste Management said that the government had initiated policy on waste generation, collection, evacuation, disposal and recycling.

Giwa stated that the state  government had allocated a parcel of land, specifically for dumping and recycling of waste.

According to him, very soon, waste management officials will be moving from house to house to sensitise residents to  waste management.

NEMA in collaboration with Taraba State Emergency  Management Agency, had  earlier visited schools, palaces, markets among other places to carry out the proper waste management campaign.
