NCAA warns Int’l airlines on passenger travel restriction issues

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines regarding issues surrounding passenger travel restrictions.
This was stated in an official release signed by the Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Mr Michael Achimugu, in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Achimugu, the NCAA has received numerous complaints from passengers about airlines selling tickets, only to transport them halfway to their destinations before returning them to Nigeria.
“These incidents, where some Nigerians are denied boarding or entry at transit points due to visa or travel restrictions, are causing considerable distress to passengers and damaging the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
“The NCAA considers such practices entirely unacceptable. It is the duty of airlines to inform passengers of any potential barriers to their entry at their final destination before their journey begins.
“Passengers must not be placed in a situation where they are refused entry or sent back to Nigeria after reaching an intermediate or transit stop,” he said.
He further stated that, in accordance with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, Part 19.21.1.1, all airlines and their agents must ensure that passengers are made aware of any potential entry restrictions or visa requirements before departure.
The director stressed that airlines must take the necessary steps to screen passengers and provide them with accurate, up-to-date information about travel documentation and visa requirements before issuing tickets or allowing them to board.
“In view of this, the NCAA informs all international airlines operating in Nigeria that such occurrences will no longer be tolerated.
“With immediate effect, any airline found engaging in these practices will face regulatory action, which may include fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties as deemed appropriate.
“The NCAA expects full cooperation from all airlines in upholding the integrity and professionalism of the aviation sector, while also safeguarding the welfare of Nigerian travellers.”
