Navy rescues 59 from drowning, loses officer in operation

The Nigerian Navy (NN) has reported that its Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny rescued 59 individuals from the dredging vessel MV AMBIKA 4, which was operating at the Okpobo field near Okpobo River.

Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, shared this update on Friday in Abuja. He confirmed that Lt.-Commander Gideon Gwaza lost his life during the operation. The area is particularly hazardous during this season.

The dredging vessel, contracted by Sterling Global Oil Limited, was at risk of sinking near the turbulent entrance to Okpobo River. In response, the Navy deployed a rescue team from FOB Bonny, including 10 armed personnel in two interceptor boats, led by the Base Operations Officer.

Challenges arose due to strong waves, prompting the dispatch of additional boats for reinforcement. The operation also involved Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy helicopters, and one Nigerian Airforce helicopter.

All 59 crew members were successfully rescued, but the Base Operations Officer, Lt.-Commander Gwaza, tragically lost his life. He fell overboard during the 10-hour rescue mission, which began at midnight on July 29 and concluded at 10:00 AM on July 30.

The Nigerian Navy mourns the loss of Lt.-Commander Gwaza, a skilled combat diver, whose sacrifice highlights the risks faced by Navy personnel in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain. His dedication and bravery will be remembered.
