National Privacy Week: Minister Tijani highlights urgent need for behavioral change in digital era

In an era where technology infiltrates every facet of society, the pressing need for behavioral change to safeguard data privacy has taken center stage.

The Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, who is a prominent advocate for responsible technology use, emphasised the imperative for individuals, governments, civil society organisations, and corporate entities to play active roles in enlightening citizens about data privacy.

Speaking at the Press Conference hosted by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) on Sunday at Abuja Continental Hotel, Minister Tijani stressed the significance of National Privacy Week as a crucial period for reflection on the pervasive role technology plays in daily life. From recording videos on smartphones to utilising interconnected gadgets, individuals contribute to the vast amount of data generated daily, warranting heightened protection measures. The responsibility extends beyond individuals, with corporations urged to design digital products that prioritize user privacy.

“As we build new digital products, it’s crucial to ensure they don’t compromise individuals’ privacy. Companies bear the responsibility not only for managing data appropriately but also for constructing products that protect people,” Tijani asserted.

The evolving landscape of public services, underscored by the government’s directive to transform services through technology, introduces a digital era for civil services. With an increasing shift towards digitisation, citizens can expect a plethora of services to be offered digitally. However, this transformation also raises concerns about the potential dangers associated with the collection and sharing of data.

Tijani pointed out the necessity for government agencies to uphold stringent data protection measures as they embrace digitalization. Acknowledging the role of the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Galaxy Backbone in overseeing and managing data exchange systems, he stressed the importance of adherence to established guidelines and procedures.

“While NDPC provides oversight, Galaxy Backbone manages the data exchange system. It is imperative that the procedures and guidelines set forth by NDPC are rigorously followed to ensure the appropriate protection of data within the government,” Tijani stated.

The Minister further expressed gratitude for the government’s commitment to advancing public services through technology and emphasised the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in fostering a digital environment that respects and protects individual privacy. The call for behavioral change echoes the sentiment that, in the age of technological omnipresence, societal harmony requires a conscientious approach to data privacy.
